The text of the verso begins almost at the beginning of Exodus 36:34 \"[Ipsa] autem tabulata deauravit, fusis basibus earum argenteis. He and Bobbie Van Ingram dedicate the gift of this medieval manuscript to the following: \"Timothy Renick, by example, taught me the value of patience, generosity, encouragement, good humor and open-mindedness in the pursuit of understanding. Through him, I learned the value of ancient philosophy and medieval scholasticism, of not dismissing the thoughts of our ancestors, and recognizing that truth is perdurable: once attained, to the degree attained, it remains valuable and beneficial, though never unquestionable or without need of amendment and expansion. He taught me the value of learning the historical context of beliefs and ideas, to understand the needs those things met in the lives of the thinkers who discovered or invented them. Through Dr. Renick, I met Augustine and learned his deeply introspective, personal form of philosophizing, and I met Thomas Aquinas and learned his method of giving various points of view a fair hearing before sifting the salvageable from the unnecessary. Most importantly for my own intellectual growth I learned Aquinas’ Doctrine of the Unity of Truth: that all truth, no matter the source, is, in theory, reconcilable and never to be scorned. --Angel Medina de Lemus guided me as I began my study of the philosophy of the great Spanish thinker, Jose Ortega y Gasset. I was particularly fortunate that GSU had someone like Dr. Medina present, possessing a background familiarity with scholasticism, neo-Thomism, and phenomenology and existentialism. He was able to help me see both links and differences between the movements and place Ortega within his proper historical and biographical contexts. Without him, I am unsure how much progress I might have made guessing at the complexities of the themes that Ortega often points to or only briefly suggests in his works. Certainly, my intellectual and philosophical progress would be far more stunted than they are. --Both of these teachers brought me out of a state of spiritual and philosophical immaturity and set me on the path to something akin to adulthood. Both set a high standard to live up to years later when I taught my own students ethics. For these things and more than I can ever express, I am grateful. --I owe Jeffery A. Swope a debt of gratitude as well. As manager of Half Price Books on Broadway in San Antonio, Texas - my present employer - he listened as I excitedly explained what this manuscript was, how important it could be to a university community, and my willingness to pay whatever he asked for it.
