Abstract |
This recording begins with M. H. Ross interviewing Charles West. Charles West, with input from his sister, Anne West Ross, shares memories of his childhood, his parents, his work experiences, serving in the army, and being a hobo. The bulk of the recording is an interview by M. H. Ross with his mother-in-law Lillie West. Lillie West discusses her aunt Easter, her son Don, Don's education, and traditional practices for keeping livestock in Gilmer County, Ga. Lillie discusses several of her other children, including one daughter who got sick and died as a very young woman. She describes various extended family members and the relationships between them. Several unnamed family members are present and speak during these interviews. |
Biographical or historical note |
Lillie Mulkey West, the mother-in-law of M. H. Ross, was a fourth generation North Georgian and an early ballad singer and worker-musician. In his book Roots of a Region, Georgia State University Professor John A. Burrison describes Lillie as: …a singer, quilter, and family herbal doctor…she was a true traditionalist, but something in her genes or upbringing (perhaps that independent spirit said to be a trait of mountain folk) made her unconventional, too: she read the New York Times under a huge magnifying glass, didn’t share many of her neighbors’ and kinfolks’ superstitions (but enjoyed talking about them), and reared some very progressive offspring…she had one foot in the past, but the other firmly planted in the modern world." |
