Abstract |
In this interview, M. H. Ross describes his and his wife's experiences living in Macon, Georgia shortly after World War II. He and Jane Ross Davis discuss a particularly dramatic incident in which a group of Ku Klux Klan members invaded the Ross family's home in an attempt to attack Ross, but were instead met by his wife Anne, who was beaten badly enough to cause her to miscarry her fetus. Ross talks about organizing efforts he carried out in Macon on behalf of the International Union of Mine, Mill, and Smelter Workers alongside Frank Allen, an African-American organizer. The racial dynamics of organizing labor in the South in the 1940s are discussed at length. Ross describes his wife's effort to help organize a plant of the Carling Tile Company by meeting the company's female workers. |
