Scope note | Richard Rhodes papers include printed materials, newspaper clippings, correspondence, organizational minutes, bylaws and financial records, artifacts including buttons, hat, and textiles, 1987-1993, 2012. The political material relates to Rhodes' involvement in LEGAL, the DeKalb Democratic Party, and the 1988 National Democratic Convention in Atlanta. Many of the newspaper clippings reflect on the impact of the gay community within Atlanta and the March on Washington in October, 1987. |
Biographical or historical note | Richard Rhodes was born in 1938 in Tampa, Florida. He graduated from the University of Florida with a degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management. Richard Rhodes participated in the March on Washington in October, 1987. While the event was ""life-changing"" he was not willing to come out openly. Richard Rhodes became involved in Legislate Equality for Gays and Lesbians [LEGAL] in 1988 as a district caucus member, and ultimately was elected as a delegate to the 1988 Democratic National Convention. In 1990, Richard Rhodes became the Chair of the DeKalb Democratic Party. He has gained considerable knowledge and experience regarding how the Georgia legislature works, and has used it as a lobbyist. He promotes mainstream, gay, and lesbian concerns. |
