Scope and Content of the Records

The records, 1968-2003, [bulk 1988-1999], are mainly composed of correspondence between the Organized Labor Awards Banquet Committee and Atlanta area labor leaders, political leaders, and union officials. The bulk of the records date from the 1990s. Also contained in the collection are annual banquet programs, which provide short biographies on annual award winners, as well as the George Meany College Degree Scholarship Program. Included are photographs from banquets and video tapes, including one of a speech by Secretary of Labor Robert Reich to the OLWCC Friends of Labor.

History of the Organized Labor Awards Banquet Committee

In November 1968, members of the Atlanta Chapter of the Workmen’s Circle, a Jewish fraternal order, met with the Jewish Labor Committee to discuss an event to honor attorney Joseph Jacobs for his lifetime of service to the labor movement. They joined with the Atlanta trade union leaders to establish the Organized Labor & Workmen's Circle Banquet Committee. The first awards banquet was held in 1969 and Joseph Jacobs would be the first honoree inducted into the "Labor Hall of Fame." In 1996, this committee became the Organized Labor Awards Banquet and in 2004 the name was changed to the Georgia AFL-CIO Labor Awards.

Through its annual labor awards banquet, the Georgia AFL-CIO Labor Awards give recognition to outstanding labor leaders who have demonstrated a commitment to improving and upholding the rights of working people in Georgia. As a result of the banquet, proceeds of the awards dinner have been raised to support programs, such as the Georgia State University's Southern Labor Archives and Labor Studies Program.
