Scope and Content of the Records

The Records, 1939-1979, of the Central North Carolina Joint Board of the Amalgamated Clothing and Textile Workers Union (ACTWU), consist primarily of correspondence, grievances, time study data on job productivity in the textile industry, and various kinds of material pertaining to the strike by Textile Workers Union of America (TWUA) Locals 578 and 584 against the Harriet-Henderson Mills in Henderson, N.C. The correspondence is mostly that of Central Joint Board Business Manager, Robert A. Parker. Another large portion of the correspondence pertains to TWUA Local 319 of the Highland Cotton Mills in High Point, N.C. The largest single series is a file of newspaper clippings on the Harriet-Henderson strike. These clippings from several newspapers in the state constitute practically a daily report on the strike from November 1958 to the summer of 1960, when the union abandoned the strike. Boyd E. Paton, TWUA Southern Organizing Director, and six others were indicted for conspiracy to dynamite the Henderson Cotton Mills. The TWUA's support of this strike and the violence that occurred made it a national news story in 1959.

Historical Note

In 1980s name changed to Amalgamated Clothing and Textile Workers Union Carolina Joint Board.
