Abstract:The District of Columbia Nurses Association was founded in 1903 in order to promote the advancement of the educational standards of nursing and to adopt a code of professional ethics. Later, the organization lobbied for nursing legislation, and acted as a collective bargaining agent for District of Columbia nurses. District of Columbia Nurses Association records, 1903-1977, include correspondence (1908-1974); executive board, committee, and section minutes (1903-1971); reports (1905-1971); newspaper articles, pamphlets, and periodical published or collected by the organization; files of the Board of Directors; and collective bargaining files with several District employers, both public and private. The collection also contains a large number of congressional bills and resolutions concerning nursing, as well as material relating to the history of the Association.

Scope and Content of the Records

The Records, 1903-1977, of the District of Columbia Nurses Association (DCNA) consist of executive board, committee, and section minutes; correspondence; reports; newspaper articles; pamphlets and periodicals published or collected by the organization; files of the Board of Directors; audit reports and other financial documents; and collective bargaining files with several District employers of nurses, both public and private. The Records includes a large number of congressional bills and resolutions concerning nursing, as well as several folders of historical documents of the DCNA.


Historical Note

The District of Columbia Nurses Association was founded in 1903 as the Graduate Nurses Association of the District of Columbia, with objectives of promoting the advancement of the educational standards of nursing and adopting a code of professional ethics. The organization is now a major lobbyist for nursing legislation on both the local and federal levels. It is also a collective bargaining agent for nurses in the District, and is a member of the American Nurses Association.
