History of the Order of Railway Telegraphers

Railroad telegraphers first began trade union activities during the Civil War when they joined with their commercial counterparts to create the National Telegraphic Union in 1863, but it was short-lived. In 1886, a group of railroad telegraphers met in Cedar Rapids, Iowa to form a secret organization named the Order of Railway Telegraphers of North America, primarily a fraternal organization. Rivalries from other union groups forced the organization to turn to a more protective trade union similar in form and structure to other railroad brotherhoods and began collective bargaining.
