Scope and Content of the Collection

The collection of Philip Taft, 1946-1976 contains articles by Taft consisting of offprints of book reviews and articles published in scholarly journals, essay collections and encyclopedias. Subjects covered include the national organization of unions, union affairs, labor relations, contemporary problems in labor and the work of Selig Perlman.


Biography of Philip Taft

Philip Taft (1902-1976) was a prominent American labor historian and economist. He received his A.B. from the University of Wisconsin in 1932, and under the direction of Selig Perlman, he completed the requirements for the Ph.D. in Economics at the same institution in 1935. Taft served as a research associate at Wisconsin from 1935-1936 and as an associate economist on the Social Security board from 1936-1937. From 1937 through 1968, he held a teaching position in the department of Economics at Brown University and for a time served as departmental chairman, In 1968, he became Emeritus Professor of Economics at Brown.
