Scope and Contents of the Records

This collection contains a variety of documentation of the GCIU Local 527-S's activities. Included are assorted contracts, negotiations, agreements, proposals, settlements, union organization, general correspondence, business correspondence, union correspondence, government correspondence, grievances, and arbitrations. Also included is specific documentation of the GCIU's Health and Welfare Benefits program.


Historical Note

Graphic Communications International Union (GCIU), Local 527-S (Atlanta, Ga.) was founded in 1946. Originally a local of the International Printing Pressmen and Assistants' Union of North America (IPPAU), it was known as Atlanta Printing Specialties and Paper Products Union, Local 527. Following several mergers of printing industry unions, the GCIU formed in 1983. Since the GCIU's 2005 merger with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, the local has been known as Graphic Communications Conference/Teamsters Local 527-S. Ralph Meers has served as president of Local 527-S for many years.
