Scope and Contents of the Records

The records of United Rubber, Cork, Linoleum, and Plastic Workers of America, Local 12 (East Gadsden, Ala.) primarily contains printed material, circa 1930s-1980s. The records include pamphlets and newspaper clippings regarding Local 12's history, Goodyear policy committee records, agreements and settlements with Goodyear, an AFL-CIO Steward Manual, general union manuals, the 1987 URW constitution, general correspondence, pension conference documents, OSHA and EPA documentation, materials from Edward Kennedy's 1980 presidential campaign, notes from the 32nd URW Officers Convention, a URW Newsletter, and general union organization materials.


Historical Note about United Rubber, Cork, Linoleum, and Plastic Workers of America, Local 12 (East Gadsden, Ala.)

Incorporated in 1935, the United Rubber Workers of America (URW) acted as a CIO-affiliated union representing the interests of rubber workers throughout the country. The Goodyear Tire and Rubber plant in East Gadsden, Alabama, had opened in 1929. After a decade of organizing efforts, often met with violent opposition, URW Local 12 was chartered and won a vote to represent the plant's workers in 1943. In 1945, the national changed its official name to United Rubber, Cork, Linoleum and Plastic Workers of America. The URW merged into the larger United Steelworkers of America (USWA) in 1995 and the local was redesignated USWA Local 12L.
