The collection contains a photograph, press release, and correspondence related to the presentation of the NPA's Gold Medal Award to former Amalgamated Clothing and Textile Workers Union (ACTWU) General President Murray Finley.

Scope and Contents of Collection

Collection includes a photograph of Murray Finley, President Emeritus of the Amalgamated Clothing and Textile Workers Union (ACTWU) accepting the Gold Medal Award of the National Planning Association in Washington D.C. (February 3, 1988). Collection also includes press release, correspondence, and news release associated with the event held in Finley's honor.


Historical and Biographical Notes

History of the National Planning Association The National Planning Association (NPA), established in 1934, was a private, non-profit research organization engaged in research and policy formation. The NPA united business, labor, and agricultural leaders and academics to serve on policy committees dealing with key issues affecting the United States private sector. The NPA Gold Medal Award was established in 1947 to recognize "outstanding contributions through planning to the betterment of life." Later known as the National Policy Association, NPA dissolved in 2003.

Biography of Murray Finley Murray Finley sat on the NPA Board of Trustees for fifteen years and served as chairman of is Executive Committee. An attorney, Finley worked for the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America (ACWA) from 1949, serving as its International Vice President (1962-1972) and President (from 1972). After ACWA merged with the Textile Workers Union Of America in 1976, Finley continued as general president of the newly formed Amalgamated Clothing and Textile Workers Union (ACTWU) until his 1987 retirement. Under Presidents Ford, Carter, and Reagan, Finley was appointed to the United States Advisory Committee on Trade Negotiations. He died in 1995.
