Historical Notes

Historical Note on Transport Workers Union and Association of Flight Attendants

The Transport Workers Union (TWU) was founded in 1934. It represents workers in several different transportation and service industries. The TWU is affiliated with the American Federation of Labor -- Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) and the International Transport Workers Union (ITF). The TWU is organized on the international, industry type, and local levels. The Association of Flight Attendant (AFL-CIO) began as the Airline Stewardesses Association on 22 August 1945. After several transformations, it became the A.F.A. in 1973 and was granted an AFL-CIO charter in 1987. Today, the AFA represents twenty-six airlines. Both the TWU and AFA have attempted to organize the Delta Airline flight attendants. Delta flight attendants voted against union representation in 2002, 2008, and 2010.
