Scope and Contents of the Collection

Collection contains correspondence to Thomas D. Archer from United States Senators Max Cleland and Sam Nunn (Georgia), and Senator Walter Mondale (Minnesota); Archer's International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) membership book (1943-1947); a brief history of Archer's life and achievements; and photographs. The photographs depict members attending the 1968 IUOE International Convention in Miami (Fla.), Archer receiving lifetime service award from IUOE Local 926 (Atlanta, Ga.), and a IUOE local 926 training site.


Biography of Thomas D. Archer

Thomas D. Archer was born in 1917, in Washington County, Georgia. He began working as a heavy equipment operator at the age of eighteen and enlisted in the U.S. Army as a combat engineer in the fall of 1941. He volunteered for overseas duty on December, 8 1941 and served in the South Pacific. He took part in the major campaigns of Brittish New Guinea, Dutch New Guinea, Mortier and Luzon of the Philippines. Technical Sergeant Archer was awarded the Bronze Star for Gallantry In Action in the Luzon Campaign. He completed his education while in the service and was discharged in 1945.

Archer moved to Atlanta, Georgia in 1946 and continued working in the construction field as an operator. He joined The International Union of Operating Engineers Local 926 (Atlanta, Ga.) in September of 1946, serving as the local's Business Agent in 1946 and being elected Business Manager in 1950. Under his guidance, Local 926 grew to membership in excess of fifteen hundred.

Archer served as President of the North Georgia Building Trades Council from 1952-1980. He was elected Trustee of the National Board of Operating Engineers Pension Fund in 1956. In 1973 Archer was selected as Labor Leader of the Year. He died in 1990.

The International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) was founded in 1896, it currently represents roughly 400,000 workers in approximately 170 local unions and operates nearly 100 apprenticeship programs.
