Scope and Content of the Collection

The Elijah H. Williams papers, 1921-1973, consist of convention proceedings of the Louisiana State Federation of Labor and of the Louisiana AFL-CIO, newspapers and newspaper clippings, pamphlets and photographs. The proceedings, which constitute the bulk of the records, contain committee reports, officers' reports, financial status information and resolutions adopted. A pamphlet praises the labor record of Louisiana Governor Richard W. Leche. There is a biographical sketch of "Lige" Williams written in 1965, seven years before his death.


Biography of Elijah H. Williams

Elijah Henson Williams was born August 16, 1895 in Bienville, Louisiana, and died March 19, 1972. His first labor leadership position was as the Secretary-Treasurer for the Barbers Local 161 in Shreveport, Louisiana. He served as President of the Louisiana State Federation of Labor, 1933-1956, and then as Director of AFL-CIO Region 8 from 1956-1972.
