History of the United Association of Plumbers and Steam Fitters of the United States and Canada, Local 72 (Atlanta, Ga.)

During its first years, the United Association was essentially a federation of local Unions, rather than a truly national Union of the pipe trades. In 1892 Atlanta's Plumbers Union had 42 members, but during the severe depression of the late 1890's, Local 72 became inactive. The major breakthrough toward a unified national organization came at the 1902 national convention in Omaha, when delegates approved a Nationalization Committee proposal establishing a comprehensive system of sick, death and strike benefits. It was reorganized in 1902 as Plumbers, Steam fitters and Gas Fitters Local 72. Several local plumber and pipe fitter locals later became a part of Local 72, including local 261, Local 541 and Local 758.
