The records of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 84 (Atlanta, Ga.), 1923-1986 (bulk 1971-1986), consist primarily of the administrative, office, and reference files of J.W. Giles, documenting the day-to-day operations of the union as well as Giles' interactions with the executive and international boards of the IBEW. Giles served as Assistant Business Manager of the IBEW Local 84 from 1970-1972 and Business Manager and Financial Secretary beginning in 1983.
The records include correspondence; arbitration and grievances; minutes of executive board and union member meetings; auditor reports; business manager reports; contract agreement and negotiation materials; constitutions and bylaws; training manuals; reference files; event, convention, and conference programs; pamphlets; election materials; artifacts; photographs; and audio/visual materials.
History of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 84 (Atlanta, Ga.)
Originally formed in 1890 as an affiliate of the American Federation of Labor, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) took its present name in 1899. Representing workers in such fields as utilities, communications, construction, and transportation, the IBEW is one of the largest unions in the world. Local 84 oversees union members in the metro Atlanta area and is still alive and active today.
