Abstract: Joseph D. Gleason (1929-1982), began working with the labor movement in 1948, first with the Government & Civic Employees, CIO, then the American Federation of State, County & Municipal Employees, AFL-CIO. The collection consists of materials from Gleason’s participation in organized labor from the early 1950s to his death in 1982. Most materials relate to his career in the American Federation of Government Employees, AFL-CIO, but there are also some materials from the American Federation of State, County, & Municipal Employees.

Scope and Content of the Papers

The Joseph D. Gleason papers contain materials from Gleason's participation in organized labor from the early 1950's up to his death in 1982. Most materials relate to his career in the American Federation of Government Employees, AFL-CIO, but there are also materials related to his work with the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees. The scrapbooks contain news clippings and other artifacts (newsletters, fliers, buttons, etc.) following Gleason's career. Publications in the collection consist of the Government Standard (AFGE's monthly publication) and the Second District newsletter. There are also materials from Gleason's campaigns for National Vice President. The minutes from the AFGE National Executive Council and from the AFGE conventions during the 1960s and 70s as well as a large number of convention badges, union pins and photographs. The photos are from AFGE conventions and other events. Oversize materials include several posters for the CIO, drawn by Gleason.


Biography of Joseph D. Gleason

Joseph D. Gleason was born on June 7, 1929 in Rhode Island. He began working with the labor movement in 1948, first with the Government and Civic Employees, CIO, then the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), AFL-CIO. In 1963 he was assigned to the Industrial Union Department of the American Federation of Labor - Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO). Gleason began working with the American Federation of Government Employees in 1964, District 2 (New York - New Jersey). Beginning in 1968, he was elected as national vice president of the AFGE (AFL-CIO), District 2 and held that position until 1974 (he was re-elected without opposition until then). In 1976 he was elected Executive Vice President of the AFGE. He also served on the Trade Union Consulting Committee - State University of New Jersey, Rutgers and was elected in 1974 to the State Advisory Council of Rutgers School of Industrial and Labor Relations. Gleason died in 1982.
