Abstract:The David Herman Papers, 1954-1967, contains scrapbook materials, newspaper clippings, telegrams, and printed materials relating to his presidency of the Hotel Employee's and Bartenders International Union, Local 6 (New York, NY); his work as an organizer of the Hotel Employees' Union, Local 255 (Miami, FL); the hotel employees' strike, 1955-1959, and his campaign for Miami City Council in 1967.

Scope and Content of the Collection

The collection consists of the papers of David Herman, 1954-1967, and includes scrapbook materials relating to Herman's presidency of the New York Local 6 of the Hotel Employee's and Bartenders International Union (1954); documents relating to his work as an organizer of the Hotel Employees Union in Miami (1955-1961); information about the hotel Employees strike (1955-1959); and about his campaign for Miami City Council (1967). Also included is information on hotel employee organizer Bert Ross, and on the Cuban Federation of Labor's support of Fidel Castro, 1959.


Biography of David Herman

David Herman of Newark, New Jersey, served as president of the Hotel Employees Local 6 (New York) from 1951 to 1956. He was sent to Miami, Florida, in 1955 where he helped to organize the hotel employees. He was soon relieved of his post as a special organizer, but regained it 1957. In 1958, he served as vice president of the Hotel Employees Union and held the office of president in the Local 255 until 1961 when he became the sales manager for the Miami Carillon Hotel. In 1967, he ran for the Miami City Council, but was defeated. While in Miami, Herman was chairman for the tourist advisory board and director of the United Tennant Protective League.
