Scope and Content of the Papers

The Davy Paul Laborde, Sr. papers are organized into two series, (I) Printed material and (II) Artifacts. Series I, Printed materials, include membership cards, dues books, photographs, newspaper articles, centennial anniversary mementos, and an assortment of books on labor unions. Series II, Artifacts, contain convention badges and patches, as well as a district 4 flag.


Biography of Davy Paul Laborde, Sr.

Davy Paul Laborde, Sr. (1917-1991) was a fifty-year member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America Local 1846, in New Orleans, Louisiana.

During his time with the union, Laborde was involved in many construction projects in the New Orleans area, including clean-up and reconstruction after Hurricaine Camille in 1969, the Superdome and the World's Fair in 1984.

Laborde served as Local 1846's Business Representative for over 30 years. He also served as the Executive Secretary for the New Orleans Carpenter's District Council, President of the Building and Construction Trades Council, President of the Louisiana State Council of Carpenters and Vice-President of the New Orleans AFL-CIO. He was also on several mayoral, gubernatorial and presidental committees and commissions.

Laborde oversaw the merger of black and white Carpenters Unions, established apprentice schools, and negotiated health and welfare, as well as pension plans, for his members. He died in June, 1991. [Obiturary from the Times-Picayune, Sunday June 18,1991]
