Scope and Content of the Records

The records of International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 508 (Savannah, Ga.), 1944-1984, maintained in the office of Business Manager M. J. Counihan, include by-laws, constitutions, correspondence, minutes, employee benefits plans, questionnaires; contract agreements, negotiations, and amendments to agreements; apprenticeship procedures, applications, attendance, courses, tests, evaluation, and promotion; personnel files; and photographs, artifacts, and a large map of the jurisdiction of Local 508.


History of International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 508 (Savannah, Ga.)

International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 508 (Savannah, Ga.) is part of District 5 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), which was chartered on December 4, 1891, by the AFL for all electric work. IBEW Local 508 has maintained a central office in Savannah and the jurisdiction of the office has extended to a number of counties and parts of counties in both Georgia and South Carolina.

Between 1944 and 1984, W. L. Ferrell (1944-1947), H. F. Carter (1948), and M. J. Counihan (1949-1984) served as Business Manager of IBEW Local 508. Prior to Counihan's election to Business Manager, he was the Recording Secretary (circa 1947-1948). Serving as the President of Local 508 during that period were H.G. Carter (1947-[unknown]), H. L. Collins (circa 1950-1951), and W. M. Crawford (circa 1957-circa 1978). H. G. Fitzpatrick was Assistant Business Manager with responsibilities for Local 508 out of Brunswick, Georgia (circa 1957-circa 1978).
