Scope and Content of the Records

The collection consists of records of the AFL-CIO Region 5 (Atlanta, Ga.) and its predecessor, AFL-CIO Region 6 from 1947-1981. Includes correspondence, newsletters, memoranda, proceedings, reports, and printed materials. Materials document the activities of state and local union organizations, labor councils, the AFL, the CIO, and AFL-CIO departments pertaining to political issues, candidates for office, political campaigns, lobbying, the Don Luna case and trial, the J.P. Stevens organization and boycott, issues involving union and non-union business, and general business and includes correspondence of Region 5 Director James Sala (1976-1978). Printed materials consist chiefly of reports relating to the economic situations in Georgia from 1966-1974. Also contained in the collection are bound volumes of The American Federationist (1960-1981) and audio recordings and motion picture films pertaining to the AFL-CIO’s national Committee on Political Education.

Historical Note

The AFL was organized in 1881. In 1935, a group of AFL unions formed the Committee for Industrial Organization, were expelled by the AFL in 1937, and established the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) in 1938. During the post World War II era, cooperation increased between the AFL and the CIO resulting in a 1955 merger of the two groups into the AFL-CIO. Restructuring in 1973 caused AFL-CIO Region 6 (Atlanta, Ga.) to be renumbered as Region 5. Region 5 of the AFL-CIO includes the states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee.
