Abstract | Lewis has witnessed the building of the Georgia Dome and posits that its construction contributed to Vine City's underdevelopment and recalls a few cases to prove her claim. She contends that elderly residents who were forced to move did not receive adequate compensation for the properties and after the dome was built, Vine City did not attract new residents. Like Lewis, many of her family and friends moved away but returned to Vine City because of the conveniences of the city. Yet she explains that her daughter-in-law was forced to relocate because the Department of Housing and Urban Development stopped assisting some clients. She states "If you don't own what you got you liable to get put out anytime." |
Biographical note | Nedra Lewis is originally from Nashville, Tennessee and has been a resident of Vine City since 1974. She has two children. None of her siblings reside in Georgia. Lewis attended Thelma Mitchell Academy and Washington High School. She did not attend college but did enter the Job Corps. |
