Abstract:Valerie Beynon co-founded the Southwest Georgia chapter of the National Organization for Women (NOW) in 1993, where she served as president and coordinator for more than 10 years. Her involvement in Georgia led her to serve on Georgia NOW's State Council as well as serve in the two highest leadership roles within the state's chapter, executive vice president and president from 1997-2000. The materials in this collection reflect Beynon's involvement in NOW at the local, state and national levels from 1990-2008, and in the American Association of University Women, 1995-1996.

Scope and Contents of the Papers

The Valerie Beynon Papers, 1990-2008, are organized in five series and contain newsletters and other printed materials, financial records, correspondence, subject files, and computer disks. The first three series relate to her activity with the National Organization for Women (NOW) and reflect the structure of the organization: NOW (the national body), 1990-2008; Georgia's state chapter of NOW, 1993-2009; and Southwest Georgia NOW, 1993-2009. A fourth series, containing correspondence and printed material, documents Beynon's involvement with Georgia chapter of the American Association of University Women in 1996. The fifth series consists of computer disks, 1999-2000; undated.


Biography of Valerie Beynon

Valerie Beynon served as Director of College Relations at Bainbridge College (Bainbridge, Ga.) and co-founded Southwest Georgia's National Organization for Women (NOW) chapter in 1993, serving as president and coordinator for over a decade. She worked with the NOW PAC (political action committee), and prior to moving to Georgia, served as Vice President of fundraising and vice president of community relations while a member of Tallahassee (Florida) NOW. She served as Executive Vice President of Georgia NOW in 1997 and President from 1999-2000. Beynon's other affiliations included the American Association of University Women, the Georgia Rural Urban Summit, and the Human Rights Campaign Fund.
